What is the greatest tragedy in the history of the world?
JOURNAL ENTRY 3/8/19:
I believe the greatest tragedy in the history of the world is the Holocaust. The Holocaust is the greatest tragedy in history because the Nazis, led by Hitler, persecuted and killed a total of eleven million people, six million of which were Jewish. Although there are many other genocides in our world's history, I believe the inhumane treatment of the Jews and other people was catastrophic. First of all, Hitler rose to power by taking advantage of Germany's failing economy. He targeted the unemployed and lower middle class, promising them a better Germany and a change in the way the country is run. However, in his rise to power, Hitler suspended civil liberties, eliminated political opposition, advocated extreme nationalism, and worst of all, blamed Jews for everything wrong in the world and for Germany's loss in WW2. After his election, he was able to establish the Nazis as the only legal political party in Germany and use them to capture civilians throughout all of Europe. The inhumane treatment of Jews began from when they were captured. They were all transported to concentration camps, but if they were seen as unfit for working, they were sent to these gassing chambers disguised as showering facilities, where they were killed through poisonous gas. The other people who did have to work often died from starvation and disease. Many civilians did not even make it to the camps because they were either gassed on the train or died from starvation/heat exhaustion. In conclusion, I believe the Holocaust was the greatest tragedy in the history of the world because it claimed the lives of many innocent civilians just because of their race.
